Phentolamine : Therapeutic uses, Dosage & Side Effects
Phentolamine (congener of tolazoline) is a adrenergic antagonist (non-selective blocker), useful in pheochromocytoma etc.
Dose : 5 mg i.v.
Route : Intravenous
Duration of action : few minutes
Trade name : Regitine, Oraverse, Fentanor
Therapeutic uses : Phentolamine has following usage :
- Used for short-term management of pheochromocytoma.
- Used locally to prevent dermal necrosis following extravasation of norepinephrine.
- Useful to treat hypertensive crisis due to abrupt withdrawal of clonidine and from ingesting tyramine-containing foods in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
- Used to reverse or shorten the duration of soft-tissue anesthesia.
Note:-
- It is contraindicated in patients with coronary artery disease.
- It should be used with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer.
Side effects: Adverse effects are as follows:
- Reflex Tachycardia,
- Postural hypotension,
- Nasal stuffiness,
- Nausea,
- Vomiting,
- Inhibition of ejaculation,
- Palpitation,
- Miosis,
- Cardiac arrhythmias,
- Anginal pain.
