Metoprolol : Therapeutic uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Metoprolol is a adrenergic antagonist (β2-selective blocker), used to treat cardic disorders like- hypertension, angina pectoris, tachycardia, & heart failure etc.
Dose: 50-225 (immediate release orally), 10-200  mg (extended release orally) 5 mg IV every 2 minutes
Route: Oral, Intravenous

Trade name: Metolar, Setaloc, Lopressor, Toprol-XL (extended-release formulation)
Therapeutic uses:
Metoprolol has following usage :

  • Used to treat essential hypertension, angina pectoris, tachycardia, heart failure, & vasovagal syncope
  • Used as secondary prevention after myocardial infarction.
  • Used as an adjunct in treatment of hyperthyroidism, and for migraine prophylaxis.
  • Extended-release formulation of metoprolol is indicated for the management of chronic heart failure.

Side effects: Adverse effects of Metoprolol are as follows:

  • Cardiac failure,
  • Hypotension,
  • Complete atrioventricular block,
  • Bradycardia,
  • Second degree atrioventricular block,
  • First degree atrioventricular block,
    Blurred vision,
  • Chest pain or discomfort,
  • Confusion,
  • Sweating,
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness.

Contraindications:

  • Metoprolol generally is contraindicated for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction in patients with heart rates of < 45 beats per minute, heart block greater than first-degree (PR interval ≥ 0.24 second), systolic blood pressure <100 mm Hg, or moderate to severe heart failure.
