Definition

  • Foreign body aspiration can be a life-threatening emergency.
  • An aspirated object (either solid or semisolid) may lodge in the larynx or trachea.
  • Age: Can occur at any age but peak 6 months to 2 years
  • Most common of lodging: Right bronchus

  • India: Peanuts > coins > buttons

Most dangerous foreign body: Circular button batteries

Clinical Features

  • Most common symptom: Cough
  • Most common sign: Unilateral wheeze

Complications

  • Most common of neglected foreign body: Recurrent pneumonia

Investigations

  • Right bronchoscopy (Investigation of choice)

Treatment

  • Right bronchoscopic removal
