Cefetamet pivoxil, ester prodrug of ceftamet, is an orally active third generation cephalosporin. It can be used for Bacterial infections- Community-acquired respiratory tract infections, Pharyngotonsillitis, Urinary tract infections, Otitis media, Pneumonia and other conditions.

Antibacterial spectrum : Ceftamet pivoxil has high activity against gram-negative bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae and N. gonorrhoea.
Therapeutic uses : Ceftamet pivoxil is used in respiratory, skin-soft tissue infections, etc.
Mechanism of action : Cephalosporins cause inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis. i.e. they have the same mechanism of action as penicillin. However, they bind to different proteins than those which bind penicillins.
Side effects : Cephalosporins are generally well tolerated, but are more toxic than penicillin. Ceftamet pivoxil may provoke following side effects :
- Diarrhoea,
- Nausea,
- Vomiting,
- Hypersensitivity Reactions.
