Definition

  • Acute Bronchiolitis refers to acute inflammation of the bronchioles.
  • Age group: 1 month to 2 year (Peak: 6 month of age).
  • It is a risk factor for bronchial asthma in later life.

Causes

  • Viral infection (Most common: Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

Clinical Features

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Bilateral wheeze

Investigations

Chest X-ray

  • Normal looking
  • Hyperpigmented lung

Treatment

  • Treatment of choice: Conservative (Since it is self limited within ∼ 1 week). In few cases, drugs may be used.

Prophylaxis

  • Prophylactic agent of choice: Monoclonal antibody
