Definition
- Acute Bronchiolitis refers to acute inflammation of the bronchioles.
- Age group: 1 month to 2 year (Peak: 6 month of age).
- It is a risk factor for bronchial asthma in later life.
Causes
- Viral infection (Most common: Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
Clinical Features
- Fever
- Cough
- Bilateral wheeze
Investigations
Chest X-ray

- Normal looking
- Hyperpigmented lung
Treatment
- Treatment of choice: Conservative (Since it is self limited within ∼ 1 week). In few cases, drugs may be used.
Prophylaxis
- Prophylactic agent of choice: Monoclonal antibody
