Tropicamide is a synthetic anti-muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, used as mydriatic and cycloplegic agent for dilating the pupil and paralyzing certain muscles in the eye for diagnostic tests. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Therapeutic uses : Tropicamide is used for mydriasis and cycloplegia in eyes

Side effects : Commonly observed side effects are as follows :

  • Transient stinging,
  • Slight and transient rise in intraocular pressure
  • Redness or conjunctivitis (inflammation)
  • Blurring of near vision for a short while after instillation
  • Tropicamide may, in very rare cases, cause an attack of acute angle-closure glaucoma. This tends to be in patients with narrow anterior chamber angles, and closure risk must be assessed by the practitioner prior to instillation.

  • Your medical history, especially of personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type), high bp, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, heart disease, Down syndrome, brain damage or spastic paralysis (in children).
