Transient Neonatal Phenomena
- They are phenomena which may be present in neonates but don’t require treatment.
1. Milia
- Multiple papules on the face.
- Arise from the sebaceous gland.
Note: Miliaria is not a transient phenomena. It is a sweat rash which is due to sweat glands.
2. Erythema toxicum
- Erythematous rash on trunk of neonate.
- Appears on 2nd or 3rd day of life.
- Disappears in 1 week.
3. Stork bite
- Skin lesion in centre of forehead.
- Type of transient hemangioma.
4. Epstein pearls
- Pearly white lesion found on palate & prepuce (2P’s)
5. Subconjunctival haemorrhage
- Red eye without discharge.
6. Hymenal tag
- Loose fold of tissue protruding from hymen.
7. Withdrawal vaginal bleeding
- Occurs between 2nd to 5th day of life.
- Small in amount.
- Arise due to withdrawal of maternal hormone.
- They are always abnormal if they occurred beyond 7th day of life.
8. Breast engorgement
9. Mongolian spots
- Blue black macules on 3 site – Back, Buttock, & Thigh.
- Persist upto 1 year of age.
10. Transient pustular melanosis
- Hyperpigmented patch with multiple small pustules.
11. Natal teeth
- Location: Lower central incisor
12. Harlequin color change
- Split colouration of child.
- Cause: Transient dysfunction of autonomic nervous system involving cutaneous blood vessels.
Note: Harlequin ichthyosis is not a transient phenomena. It is a genetic disorder of skin.
13. Peeling of skin in some post term babies.
14. Physiological phimosis
- Found in some male neonates.
- It is the inability to retract prepuce over glans.
