Rivastigmine is a Cholinergic Agonist (Indirect acting/ Anti-cholinesterase agent Reversible), used in treating mild to moderate dementia (eg, impairment of memory or judgment, abstract thinking, changes in personality) in patients with Alzheimer or Parkinson disease.
Dose : 1.5-13.3 mg
Route : Oral, transdermal patch

Side effects : GI distress is the primary adverse effect, therefore, following side effects are most frequently observed :

  • Excessive cholinergic stimulation, with nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting,
  • Dyspepsia,
  • Abdominal pain,
  • Weight loss,
  • Anorexia,
  • Dizziness,
  • Headache,
  • Anxiety,
  • Drowsiness,
  • Tremor,
  • Fatigue,
  • Weakness,
  • Depression,
  • Malaise.

Contraindications :

  • Rivastigminetartrate capsules are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Rivastigmine, other carbamate derivatives or other components of the formulation
