Orciprenaline (Metaproterenol) is a adrenergic agonist (direct acting), used as Bronchodilator to treat obstructive airway diseases, asthma, and for treatment of acute bronchospasm.
Dose : 20 mg (Oral), 10-15 mg (Inhalation solution)
Route : Oral, Inhalation
Plasma Half-life : 6 hours
Duration of action : 3-4 hours
Bioavailability : 3% if inhaled, 40% if taken orally
Chemical formula : C11H17NO3
IUPAC name : (RS)-5-[1-hydroxy-2-(isopropylamino)ethyl]benzene-1,3-diol
Trade name : Alupent, Metaprel, Orcibest
Therapeutic uses : Metaproterenol is used for the long-term treatment of obstructive airway diseases, asthma, and for treatment of acute bronchospasm.
Side effects : Adverse effects of Metaproterenol are as follows:

  • Muscle tremors
  • Palpitation,
  • Restlessness,
  • Nervousness,
  • Throat irritation,
  • Ankle edema,
  • Apprehension,
  • Anxiety,
  • Tachycardia,
  • Arrhythmia,
  • Hyperglycemia,
  • Hypokalemia,
  • Hypomagnesemia.

Contraindications :

  • Use in patients with cardiac arrhythmias associated with tachycardia is contraindicated.
  • Although rare, immediate hypersensitivity reactions can occur. Therefore, MetaproterenolSulfate Inhalation Solution is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components.
