Naphazoline (2-(1-naphthylmethyl)-2-imidazoline hydrochloride) is a adrenergic agonist (direct acting), used as decongestant for temporarily relieving redness, burning, and irritation caused by dry eyes. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Therapeutic uses :
Naphazoline has following usage :

  • Used as Nasal decongestant because of vasoconstriction property.
  • Used for the relief of redness of the eyes associated with swimming, colds, and contact lenses.

Points of interest :

  • Regular use of Naphazoline for long periods should be avoided because mucosal ciliary function is impaired: atrophic rhinitis and anosmia can occur due to persistent Vasoconstriction.

Side effects : Adverse effects of Naphazoline are as follows:

  • Local irritation & stinging sensation,
  • CNS depression,
  • Nervousness,
  • Headaches,
  • Trouble sleeping,
  • Rise in BP,
  • Sneezing.

Warnings :

  • It should be used cautiously in hypertensives and in those receiving MAO inhibitors.

Contraindications :

  • Contraindicated in the presence of an anatomically narrow angle or in narrow angle glaucoma or in persons who have shown hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.
