Ibuprofen is a Propionic acid derivatives & non-selective COX inhibitor (traditional NSAID), used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or minor injury. Ibuprofen is used in adults and children who are at least 6 months old.
Dose : 400-600 mg

Therapeutic uses : Ibuprofen has following usage :

  • Used as Anti-inflammatory agent in soft tissue injuries, fractures, vasectomy, tooth extraction, postpartum & postoperatively since it suppresses swelling & inflammation.
  • Used as Analgesic agent. It is particularly effective in dysmenorrhoea in which the action is clearly due to PG synthesis inhibition.Used as Antipyretic agent to treat fever.
  • Widely used in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, especially where pain is more prominent than inflammation.

Side effects : Ibuprofen and all its congeners are better tolerated than aspirin. Side effects are milder and their incidence is lower; It may cause following Side effects :

  • Gastric discomfort, nausea and vomiting,
  • Gastric erosion and occult blood loss,
  • CNS side effects include headache, dizziness, blurring of vision, tinnitus and depression,
  • Rashes, itching and other hypersensitivity phenomena,
  • May precipitate aspirin-induced asthma,
  • Fluid retention.
