Esmolol is a adrenergic antagonist (β2-selective blocker), useful in treating the tachycardia, postoperative hypertension & arrhythmia.
Dose: 50-500 mcg/kg/min.
Route: Intravenous
Duration of action: 20 minutes after stopping an infusion
Trade name: Brevibloc
Therapeutic uses:
Esmolol has following usage :

  • Used in patients during surgery to prevent or treat tachycardia and in the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia.
  • Particularly useful in severe postoperative hypertension and is a suitable agent in situations where cardiac output, heart rate, and blood pressure are increased.
  • Used as class II anti-arrhythmic agent.

Side effectsAdverse effects of Esmolol are as follows:

  • Dizziness, faintness,
  • Hypotension,
  • Diaphoresis,
  • Blurred vision,
  • Confusion,
  • Increased sweating
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness.
