Dicycloverine (Dicyclomine) is a synthetic anti-muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, used to treat muscular spasm, morning & motion sickness, IBS etc.
Dose : 20 mg (adult), 5-10 mg (children)
Route : Oral, I.M.
Plasma half-life : 5 hour
Duration of action : around 6 hours

Therapeutic uses : Dicyclomine has following usage :-

  • Used as anti-spasmodic agent because it has direct smooth muscle relaxant action (specially in GIT).
  • Used to treat morning sickness and motion sickness because of anti-emetic property.
  • Used to treat Irritable bowel syndrome IBS, minor diarrhea & dysmenorrhoea.

Point of interest :

  • It is not recommended below 6 months of age because of atropinic toxicity symptoms.
  • Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this drug.

Side effects : Commonly observed side effects are as follows :

  • Tachycardia,
  • Confusion,
  • Urinary retention,
  • Increased intraocular pressure.
