Therapeutic uses :
Bupropion has following usage :

  • Primarily indicated as anti-depressant drug for treating depression.
  • Used for prevention of seasonal depressive disorder.
  • Useful as a smoking cessation treatment for decreasing cravings and attenuating withdrawal symptoms of nicotine in patients trying to quit smoking.
  • May improve symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  • Has been used off-label for neuropathic pain and weight loss.

Note:- It has effects on sleep EEG that are opposite those of most antidepressant drugs.
Side effects :
Bupropion may produce following side effects:

  • Dry mouth,
  • Sweating,
  • Nervousness,
  • Tremor,
  • Insomnia,
  • Agitation,
  • A dose dependent increased risk for seizures,
  • Sexual dysfunction (very rare).

Contraindications :

  • Use of bupropion should be avoided in patients at risk for seizures or those who have eating disorders such as bulimia.
