Benztropine (Benzatropine) is a synthetic anti-muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, used in treating Parkinson disease in combination with other medicines. It is also used to control tremors and stiffness of the muscles due to certain antipsychotic medicines (eg, phenothiazines).

Therapeutic uses : Benztropine is used as adjunct to treat Parkinson’s disease, Parkinsonian syndromes, including antipsychoticinduced extrapyramidal symptoms.
Side effects : Commonly observed side effects are as follows :

  • Xerostomia (dryness of the mouth),
  • Mood alterations,
  • Visual problems,
  • Interfere with gastrointestinal peristalsis and are contraindicated in patients with glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, or pyloric stenosis,
  • Urinary retention,
  • Constipation,
  • Impairment of memory and organic confusional states (more common in the elderly).

Drug Interactions : Benztropine may interact with following drugs :

  • Potassium tablets/capsules
  • Pramlintide

Precautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist

  • If you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
  • Your medical history, especially of respiratory problems, glaucoma, heart problems, high bp, liver disease, seizures, GIT problems, hyperthyroidism, urinary problems, personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type), kidney disease, psychiatric disorders, personal or family history of a substance use disorder.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Benztropine mesylate tablets.
  • Because of its atropine-like side effects, this drug is contraindicated in pediatric patients under three years of age, and should be used with caution in older pediatric patients.
