Azelastine is a second generation H1- receptor blocker (Anti-histamine) with bronchodilator property, useful in relieving symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergies in certain patients. It may help reduce nasal symptoms of rhinitis (eg, itching, sneezing, stuffy or runny nose). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor..
Dose : 4 mg oral, 0.28 mg intranasal (two sprays of 0.14 mg)
Route : Oral, Nasal, Ocular
Plasma half-life : 22 hours
Duration of action : 12-24 hours
Bioavailability : 40% (intranasal)

IUPAC name : (RS)-4-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-2- (1-methylazepan-4-yl)-phthalazin-1-one

Therapeutic uses : Azelastine has following usage :

  • Useful in treating & preventing the allergic reactions like-Hey fever (seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis / coryza), pallinosis, hives (urticaria/ atopic dermatitis), dermographism, eczema, sneezing, and common cold.
  • Given by nasal spray for seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis it provides quick symptomatic relief lasting 12 hr.

Side effects : Second-generation H1-antagonists show very few side effects in converse to First generation; Following side effects may be observed:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness,
  • Stinging in nose,
  • Altered taste perception,
  • Tiredness,
  • Dry mouth,
  • Weakness,
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain etc.

Azelastine have negligible sedation.
